About

Why Brave

Aspiration, Instruction, not Description

I’ve made popcorn for many years because I simply love to make it. Small batches, seasoned liberally, delivered by hand to friends and family. I wrestled internally for a long time about whether I should ever turn this passion of mine into a business. Attempting to answer this question meant contending with fear, self-doubt, and ultimately a sense of worthlessness. As you can imagine, this way of talking to myself bled into non-popcorn matters, too!

Today, I’m choosing bravery because God’s commanded bravery in us. God gives us talents, gifts, and even passions. We’re told to use them and multiply them, and to do so joyfully. So with that, bravery may start as a command, but I know that it is the only right choice, in the end; that whatever we do in obedience is ultimately for our good and the good of the world.

What I hold to

It was given to me.

The things we are good at are gifts. It’s our responsibility to steward those gifts for good.

1 Timothy 4:14

Small but mighty.

Popcorn itself is unlikely to solve the world’s problems. Maybe it can solve a community’s problems. Maybe it can make a difference to a single person. Maybe that’s enough.

Luke 16:10

A kept gift is a wasted gift.

Milk left sitting curdles and becomes waste. Milk used and given while it’s fresh feeds and nourishes.

Romans 12:6

The hard thing is often the right thing.

Many of us, maybe even you, fear being seen. Maybe you’ve got some dream you want to put out in the world that you know will mean exiting your front door and letting everyone see you vulnerably. They might see us make a mistake or look goofy out here. Why not stay hidden and comfortable? Think of anyone great you’ve ever known. I’d wager they weren’t cowering or hiding when you encountered them.

Joshua 1:9

Where some of the money goes

A portion of every order supports the food pantry at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scotch Plains, which is my family's parish. They feed families in New Jersey every week and they've been doing it for ages.

I will update this page ASAP when I've better calculated my costs so that I can commit to a realistic and generous contribution to IHM's ministry.
